M.I.A.’s “Bad Girls” Is Alluringly Dangerous

M.I.A. had a great week - one better than her entire year of 2010. You remember; that was when her third album, MAYA (and its dated & distorted digital-inspired imagery), completely bombed. That was when she and New York Times Magazine writer Lynn Hirschberg engaged in a full-fledged feud - after the publishing of a not-so-flattering article - that resulted in M.I.A. very maturely posting the journalist’s phone number on Twitter. But that’s all in the past.
Last week, not only did we see Maya literally cheer Madonna on - pompoms & all - in Madge’s new video for “Gimme All Your Luvin’,” but the two pop stars (each in their own right) also performed the track together at the 46th Super Bowl’s halftime show on Sunday. However, thanks to M.I.A.’s flip of the middle finger to the audience and, well, to America, her video release of “Bad Girls,” the first single from her forthcoming album, was overshadowed.
